An Evening of Poetry
You are invited to hear poems from Poet-in-Residence for the Cuckmere Pilgrim Path Phil Vernon and local poet Mims Sully at Berwick Church. Poets, please bring along one of your own poems to read in ‘Open Mic’ (poems of up to 40 lines only, please).
Originally trained as a forester, Phil Vernon retired in 2024 after a career in international humanitarian and peacebuilding work. His version of the mediaeval hymn Stabat Mater with music by Nicola Burnett Smith has been performed internationally. He has had three poetry collections published, most recently Guerrilla Country (Flight of the Dragonfly Press, 2024), exploring peace and conflict within different social and physical environments.
Mims Sully is a prize-winning poet based in East Sussex. Her poems have been nominated for the Pushcart Prize, Forward Prize and Best of the Net, and have appeared widely in journals and anthologies, including Under the Radar; Ink, Sweat and Tears; The Alchemy Spoon; Crannóg and The Dark Horse. She enjoys writing in free-verse and traditional forms for both adults and children.
